چکیده

Georgia, located in the Southeastern USA, has been historically dominated by two perennial forage grass production systems. Tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum [Schreb.] S.J. Darbyshire) is more prevalent northern parts of state, while bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] ubiquitous to southern portion. Climatologists have documented notable changes temperature and precipitation patterns state that contributed an invasion warm-season species portion state. In transition zones between and-cool-season grass-dominated regions North America, C4 grasses can maintain productivity at high temperatures C3 are transitioning a reproductive stage with minimal vegetative growth during summer. For this reason, could replace grasslands latitudes greater than 35°. This manuscript documents expansion into explores climatic factors driving transition, highlights previous on-going research. We specifically focus on evaluating freeze or cold tolerance germplasm. The C. cultivars exhibit nlemfuënsis (stargrass) since they rhizomatous rely less above-ground stolons for regrowth winter survival. Conversely, these tend poor nutritive value highly susceptible insect damage. On-going research identifying germplasm provides adequate meet needs farmers systems lower zone.

Selecting a Forage Bermudagrass Variety

Unlike most other agronomic crops, the selection of a bermudagrass cultivar is a long-term commitment. Bermudagrass is a warm-season perennial grass that can persist and withstand the rigors of grazing and hay production for decades. Establishing it, however, is a significant investment that pays off over the long-term. It is important to understand the characteristics of the different cultivar...

Echinococcus spp. Tapeworms in North America

Alveolar and cystic echinococcosis are emerging and reemerging in Europe, Africa, and Asia. The expansion of Echinococcus spp. tapeworms in wildlife host reservoirs appears to be driving this emergence in some areas. Recent studies suggest a similar phenomenon may be occurring in North America. We describe the context of Echinococcus spp. research in North America, with a specific focus on the ...

Neurospora in temperate forests of western North America.

The fungal genus Neurospora has a distinguished history as a laboratory model in genetics and biochemistry. The most recent milestone in this history has been the sequencing of the genome of the best known species, N. crassa. The hope and promise of a complete genome sequence is a full understanding of the biology of the organism. Full understanding cannot be achieved, however, in the absence o...

FACTSHEET Summer dormancy in temperate forage plants

One of the most potent of these drought survival traits is summer dormancy. Plants that give either nil or minimal growth after rainfall or irrigation in summer are expressing summer dormancy. There have been several field experiments conducted over the recent drought periods where grasses with the summer dormancy trait have had much better survival over extended and intensely dry periods than ...
